While No/Low VOC

Is important it is only ONE component to consider.

The No/Low VOC chatter concerns itself primarily with the OUTDOOR environment.

WHY?

Regulators were concerned with minimizing the pollution leading to ozone depletion. As a result, many of the claims of low/No VOC have nothing to do with Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and its potential effects.

Indoor Air Quality is often more polluted than outdoor air so choosing products that don't contribute to poor IAQ is important for your health.

No/Low VOC is all well and good, but it's similiar to the magician's trick of distracting you over here while the real trick goes on outside your vision.

VOC's - Volatile Organic Compounds - are those chemicals that readily migrate at room termperature. They are the ingredients that typically cause the nasty odours associated with paint.

But there are other toxic chemicals found in paints that are odourless and which are extremely harmful. So while the claims of No/Low VOC abound the trick is the many toxic and often carcinogenic chemicals that have been left firmly in place.

So while a paint may claim to be Low/No VOC it may still contain a host of potentially carcinogenic and toxic chemicals - nasty ingredients, such as antifreeze which keeps paint shippable during our cold winter months without the added cost of a heated shipping unit or longer shipping times.

Formaldehyde

Used as a binder, fungicide/mildewcide - this carcinogen is considered an allergen an asthma trigger. Formaldehyde can occur naturally but is produced synthetically and in large quantities for use in clothing, furniture, pressed wood and many other building materials. Strong smelling, formaldehyde is considered highly toxic through exposure to inhalation, skin absorption and by mouth. Symptoms include, watery eyes, burning or stinging eyes, skin rashes, stuffy nose and flu like symptoms. Repeated exposure can lead to bronchitis.

Benzene

A sweet smelling industrial solvent that is produced by petroleum refining. Highly toxic when inhaled. Known to cause chromosomal damage, cancer and leukemia. Can also affect the central nervous system leading to headaches, dizziness, drowsiness and loss of consciousness. Can also be absorbed by drinking benzene contaminated water, so please do not get rid of old paint by pouring it down the drain. Paint must be disposed of responsibly at a waste management facility.

Also produced naturally by volcanoes and forest fires however, the majority of this chemical is manufactured.

Toulene

Sweet smelling industrial solvent produced by petroleum refining. Used to manufacture benzene and urethane. Considered an neurotoxin and a developmental toxin. Direct inhalation can depress the nervous system causing headaches, dizziness, memory loss, confusion and light headedness. May potentially cause liver and kidney damage, hearing loss and irregular heartbeats.

Continued exposure can cause sleep problems, fatigue and learning difficulties as well as permanent brain damage. The body tends to store VOC's in fats and the brain is in high in fat tissue. Can have serious side effects on children, particularly through inhalation of paints.

Toulene can be found in drinking water - which is why paint should be disposed of carefully at a waste centre and why old or unused paint should not be in your home or around your children. So, please do not dump old paint down the drain. Bring your old paint to us and we will arrange for it to be properly disposed.

The paints we carry do not simply make claims to being Low/No VOC - their very foundations have been based on the principals of safety, sustainability and quality.
